Lives of several patients with cardiovascular disease at stake as severe shortage of essential medicines throughout the country, reports say.

It is noted that crucial drugs, notably Nitrocontin 2.6 Tablet CR which is used to treat and prevent heart-related chest pain (angina) are in severe shortage around the country and people are desperately searching for the medicine.

It is been noted that Medicines Evaluation Committee (MEC) has not given approval for the medicine to be imported by the company which has been doing it in the past and NMRA has also not given the necessary approval.

When we contacted several pharmacies including the leading ones around the island, it was confirmed that there is a severe shortage for the medicine and this continues for last 1 and half months.

Pharmacies are also clueless when the stocks will be back and they are too worried to see the patients being desperate for the medicine amidst this lockdown.

Posts can be seen in Social Media platforms where people are desperately searching for the medicine.

Persons prescribed medication for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and cancer treatment experienced a supply shortage pertaining to some of their medication in the past as well.
